Prague Castle Accessibility

Information on accessibility, facilities, and services for visitors with disabilities at Prague Castle.

Prague Castle is more accessible than the average medieval European castle, but a few interiors still have steps and uneven cobblestones. Wheelchair users and one companion enter free, and most of the highlights — including St. Vitus Cathedral via the side ramp — are reachable step-free. See our free & reduced tickets page for the companion-free policy and visitors guide for general practical info.

Facilities and services in detail

Mobility

The courtyards, the Basilica of St. George, and St. Vitus Cathedral (via a marked ramp at the side entrance rather than the main steps) are fully step-free. The Old Royal Palace has one short ramp and is mostly step-free once inside. Golden Lane has cobblestones and the small ground-floor cottages have raised thresholds — most are still navigable in a wheelchair but the experience is bumpier. Daliborka Tower has stairs and is not wheelchair accessible. Accessible toilets are at the Information Centre in the Second Courtyard and at the exit of Golden Lane.

Sight

The audio guide includes detailed audio descriptions of the castle highlights in 11 languages. The castle does not regularly run formal touch tours, but accessible group tours can be arranged in advance via the Castle Information Service.

Hearing

Induction loops are installed at the Information Centre in the Second Courtyard. Audio-guide content is fully transcribed on the device screen for visitors who prefer to read along — handy if you don't want to wear the earpiece in echoing cathedral spaces.

Cognitive

The castle is large, open and can be overwhelming during peak hours. Visit at 09:00–10:30 in low season for the quietest, lowest-stimulation experience. The South Gardens and the Royal Garden are excellent decompression spaces when the courtyards feel busy.

Accessibility FAQ

Common questions about access at the castle

Is the castle fully wheelchair accessible?
Mostly. The courtyards, St. Vitus Cathedral (via the side ramp), the Basilica of St. George and most of the Old Royal Palace are step-free. Golden Lane has cobblestones and raised thresholds. Daliborka Tower is not wheelchair accessible.
Can I reserve a wheelchair at the castle?
The castle does not loan wheelchairs on site. Bring your own or contact the Castle Information Service in advance to ask about local rental options near Malostranská metro.
Are companions admitted free?
Yes — one companion of a disabled visitor is admitted free of charge. The disabled visitor also enters free with a valid disability card (TP, ZTP or ZTP/P, or equivalent foreign documentation).
How do I enter St. Vitus Cathedral with a wheelchair?
Use the marked ramp at the side entrance on the south side of the cathedral, not the main steps from the Third Courtyard. Staff at the door will direct you.
Are guide dogs allowed?
Yes. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the castle complex, including St. Vitus Cathedral and the Old Royal Palace.
Is there accessible parking?
Yes — designated disabled parking spaces are available at the Powder Bridge gate (Prašný most) on the north side of the castle. Access via the U Brusnice tram stop area. Pre-book in summer; arrive 30 minutes before your slot to allow for the walk down to the courtyards.
Are there accessible toilets in the complex?
Yes — accessible toilets are located at the Information Centre in the Second Courtyard and near the exit of Golden Lane. Both have step-free access.
How do I book an accessible guided tour?
Contact the Castle Information Service directly at +420 224 372 423 to arrange an accessible private tour, ideally 1–2 weeks in advance.
